This woodland scene brings together a bear, leaves, a mushroom and tiny bees in one charming hand embroidery project. Arrange the woodland motifs
Start by peeling and sticking the pattern pieces onto your fabric. You can group everything on one garment or spread the motifs more loosely if you prefer. Once the placement looks balanced, begin with the largest motif, the bear, so the rest of the design builds around it naturally.
Outline the bear with stem stitch
Bring the needle up on the outline and make one forward stitch. Do not pull the yarn all the way through straight away; leave a small loop, hold it consistently to the same side, then bring the needle back up through the centre of the previous stitch. Pull gently to create the twisted, rope-like texture of stem stitch. If you come to a sharp corner, it is often neater to finish one line and begin the next section separately rather than forcing a tight turn.
Fill the bear with long and short stitches
Inside the outline, use long and short stitches worked closely together to create a soft fur effect. Keep the stitches mainly running in the same direction and vary their lengths so the fill blends naturally. Leave small gaps for the ears, eyes and nose so those details can be stitched cleanly later. This fill takes a little time, but it gives the finished embroidery kit project much more depth.
Add the face details with satin stitch
Use satin stitch to fill the ears with short, parallel stitches. For the lighter muzzle area, fan the stitches around the shape, bringing them in through the centre and out toward the edge. Then add the eyes with a few small dark satin stitches. Outline and fill the nose with tiny straight stitches, and finish the mouth with a few short lines placed over the lighter muzzle.
Stitch the leaves and mushroom
Fill the leaves with fishbone stitch, beginning with a central stitch and then alternating side stitches back into the middle line. For the mushroom, outline the cap in stem stitch first, then fill it with long and short stitches, leaving gaps for the spots. Work the spots and stalk in satin stitch, keeping the stitches close enough that the fabric does not show between them.
Finish with the bees
Use satin stitch for each bee body, then add the stripes in a thinner dark yarn with a few short straight stitches. The wings are made with lazy daisy stitch, one loop per wing secured with a tiny anchoring stitch. Once all the motifs are complete, secure the thread tails on the reverse, rinse away the stick and stitch pattern, and let the fabric dry.
